Quad Bike Safety in South Africa: A Guide for Parents and Riders

By AfricaQuads · · 5 min read

Quad bikes are some of the most fun a family can have outdoors, but they are real machines that need respect. Whether you are buying your child's first 50cc or a 180cc for the farm, these are the safety rules we share with every Africa Quads customer.

1. Choose the right size quad for the rider

Most serious quad accidents involving children happen on quads that are too big or too fast for them. Match the quad to the rider's age and weight today:

  • Kids electric ride-on: young children up to about 8 years.
  • 50cc Upgraded Pull-start: ages 3 to 7, up to 60 kg.
  • 110cc: older children and young teens, up to about 80 kg.
  • 125cc Raptor and Wrangler: teens and lighter adults, up to 85 kg.
  • 180cc Wrangler: 16 years and older, up to 185 kg.

2. Always wear the gear

Every rider, on every ride, even a short one around the yard:

  • A properly fitting off-road helmet, fastened.
  • Goggles to keep out dust, stones and insects.
  • Gloves for grip and protection.
  • Long sleeves and long pants.
  • Sturdy over-the-ankle boots. No slip-slops or bare feet.

3. Children ride with an adult watching

Young riders should always be supervised by an adult who can see them and reach them. Start on flat, open ground away from dams, roads, fences and steep slopes. Our 50cc kids quads have a speed governor and safety cut-off, so you can limit speed while your child learns.

4. One rider, unless the quad is built for two

Passengers shift the weight and make a quad much harder to steer and stop. Stay within the maximum load on the specifications.

5. Know where you may ride

Our quads are off-road machines. Unregistered off-road quads are not allowed on public roads, so ride on private land, farms, tracks and venues where you have permission. Riding on beaches is restricted in South Africa without a permit, so check the local rules before you go.

6. Ride for the conditions

  • Slow down on gravel, sand and wet grass, where the quad can slide.
  • Take hills straight up and down, not across the slope.
  • Watch out for holes, rocks, aardvark burrows and fences, especially in long grass.
  • Avoid riding in thunderstorms and take extra care in the heat. Drink water and take breaks.
  • Do not ride in the dark without working lights.

7. Keep the quad in safe condition

Brakes, tyres, throttle and chain all affect safety. Do the two-minute check in our maintenance guide before each ride, and fix problems before the next ride, not after.
